Ta Ann’s Raplex FMU gets forest management certification

SIBU: Ta Ann Group’s Raplex Forest Management Unit (FMU) at Pila-Belaga region has been awarded the forest management certification under the Malaysia Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS) — Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) schemes on June 28, 2019.
The certification is for a period of five years.
The region covers an area of 63,993 hectares.
According to a press statement released by Ta Ann, this is the second certified FMU under Ta Ann Group after Kapit FMU.
Kapit FMU, covering an area of 149,756 hectares obtained similar certification in June 2018.
Kapit FMU had also successfully passed one year surveillance audit conducted by SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd in 2019.
Pasin FMU with an area of about 132,000 hectares is currently undergoing forest management certification.
Stage two auditing is expected to be conducted in early 2020.
Ta Ann Group is expected to obtain the certification for Pasin FMU in 2020.
Once Pasin FMU obtained the certification, all three active FMUs with total area of 345,749 hectares shall be fully certified with Sustainable Forest Management Certification in compliance with Sarawak government’s policy.
In 2014, the government announced that timber certification is mandatory for timber companies operating in Heart of Borneo (HoB) area.
This policy is now extended to all long-term forest timber licences in Sarawak to go for certification by 2022 to ensure that forests and forest resources in Sarawak are well managed in a sustainable manner, Ta Ann’s achievement is indeed a commitment to this state goal.
